Uoma Beauty founder and beauty executive, Sharon Chuter, has died at the age of 38 in Los Angeles.

According to a report by a Los Angeles medical examiner, she was found on a patio on August 14. Her death is still under investigation, and no other details have been shared.

Chuter launched Uoma Beauty in 2019 at Ulta Beauty. Before starting her own brand, Chuter worked at L’Oreal and LVMH.

After launching Uoma Beauty, Chuter created Pull Up For Change in June 2020. This initiative reportedly gave companies 72 hours to reveal the percentage of corporate and leadership roles held by Black employees. Glossier, e.l.f. Cosmetics and MAC Cosmetics were some of the participating companies.

Then in 2021, she launched the Make It BLACK Campaign with a petition to “add the current elevated and positive use of the word black” while removing “dangerous definition,” in “all major dictionaries.”

The campaign was relaunched a year later during Black History Month in partnership with nine beauty brands to relaunch popular products in black packaging.

100% of the profits were donated to the Pull Up for Change Impact Fund to be used as grants for emerging black founders and capital for black-owned businesses.

However, in 2023, Chuter stepped down as CEO of Uoma Beauty. In the Instagram announcement, she had faced a health scare that inspired her to pursue a healthier work-life balance.

Months before Chuter’s death, in February 2025, she filed a lawsuit against Uoma Beauty’s new owner, MacArthur Beauty, BrainTrust, and Settle Funding.

Among the allegations, the lawsuit claimed that “BrainTrust took control of Uoma’s operations and ultimately pushed Ms. Chuter out of her operational roles,” and that BrainTrust ceased Uoma Beauty’s operations during Chuter’s medical leave, which, according to her, was meant to end in July 2023.
